Novak Djokovic, the most successful men’s tennis player of the modern era, defeated Lorenzo Musetti in straight sets (6-4, 7-6, 6-4) in the Wimbledon 2024 semifinals. Djokovic will now face Carlos Alcaraz in the final.
Djokovic’s victory came just five weeks after undergoing knee surgery. He had a shaky start in the first set but managed to break Musetti’s serve twice to take the lead. Djokovic, 37, is aiming to match Roger Federer’s record of eight Wimbledon titles and become the oldest champion in the tournament’s modern history. He lost to Alcaraz in last year’s dramatic five-set final.
Friday’s match saw Djokovic, playing in his 49th Grand Slam semifinal, using his experience to outplay the 22-year-old Musetti, who was in his first Grand Slam semifinal. Djokovic overcame losing his serve early in the second set and dominated the tie-break. In the third set, he broke Musetti’s serve early and maintained his lead, even though Musetti saved three match points.
Carlos Alcaraz, world number three, defeated fifth-ranked Daniil Medvedev in a four-set match (6-7, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4). Alcaraz will meet Djokovic in the final. Last year, Alcaraz won the Wimbledon final against Djokovic in a five-set thriller.
Alcaraz admitted feeling nervous at the start of his match against Medvedev, who dominated the first set. Medvedev led with breaks twice but Alcaraz fought back. Medvedev’s frustration led to a warning for unsportsmanlike conduct. Despite this, he won the first set in a tie-break.
In the second set, Alcaraz broke Medvedev’s serve for a 3-1 lead after a 27-shot rally. He continued to dominate, hitting 14 winners in the third set and securing the only break in the third game. Medvedev managed to retrieve a break early in the fourth set, but Alcaraz regained his lead and won the match.
The Wimbledon 2024 final between Djokovic and Alcaraz promises to be an exciting clash, with Djokovic seeking to equal Federer’s record and Alcaraz aiming for another Grand Slam title.
