The big India vs. Pakistan game is happening on March 1 at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium.
A source from the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) says they want the BCCI to get a written statement from India’s government if the Indian team can’t come to Pakistan for next year’s Champions Trophy because of safety worries. The PCB is pushing to sort this out fast since the tournament is set for February-March.
The ICC’s yearly meeting in Colombo on July 19 doesn’t have the ‘Hybrid Model’ (where India plays their games in the UAE) on its list of things to talk about. But the ICC has put aside extra money in case they need to hold the tournament in two different countries.
“The Indian government must say no in writing if they won’t allow it, and the BCCI needs to hand over that letter to the ICC right away,” a PCB insider close to the organizing team told PTI.
“We want the BCCI to tell the ICC about their plans to come to Pakistan at least 5-6 months before the event starts, and they should do this in writing,” the PCB insider added.
The BCCI has always said that playing cricket in Pakistan depends on what the Indian government decides. Even during the 2023 ODI Asia Cup, which Pakistan hosted, India played all its games in Sri Lanka under a ‘Hybrid Model’.
The PCB gave its draft schedule to the ICC putting all of India’s games, including a possible semi-final and final, in Lahore. India will play Pakistan on March 1.
The event kicks off in Karachi on February 19 and wraps up with the final in Lahore on March 9. If the weather’s bad, they’ve got March 10 as a backup for the final. Some games will happen in Rawalpindi too.
BCCI sources say there’s no way they’re going to Pakistan right now. The ICC has set aside extra money to handle any last-minute changes.
“The ICC bosses are suggesting we put more cash aside in case we need to move some games out of Pakistan,” the source said.
