The Paris Olympics in 2024 will give athletes more than just medals made of Gold, Silver, and Bronze. This time different sports groups have said they’ll give money for the best performances, which is different from how things used to be at the Olympics. In the past, governments and country sports groups would reward their athletes for doing well at the Olympics, but now even big international sports groups are getting involved.
World Athletics has said they’ll give $50,000 to anyone who wins a gold medal in running, jumping, or throwing events. The International Boxing Association is doing something similar promising $100,000 to boxers who win gold medals.
“We need to start giving credit to athletes for what they bring to the table,” Sebastian Coe, the head of World Athletics, said in April. “The Olympic Games make money because of these athletes. It’s fair that some of this cash goes back to the people who make the Games such a big deal worldwide.”
But not everyone thinks this is a good idea. Some groups that haven’t promised cash prizes say it’s not what the Olympics are about. They worry it might make athletes pick certain sports over others just for the money. Still many sports organizations believe athletes should get paid for all their hard work.
In the past Olympic gold medalists got 7.5 million rupees (around $90,000) from the Indian government. The Indian Olympic Association also gave them an extra 10 million rupees (about $120,000). This means gold medal winners could get a total of 17.5 million rupees ($210,000) for their achievements.
