Paris Olympics 2024 is bringing some exciting changes. Here’s what’s new and different this year:
New Sport: Breaking
Breaking, also known as breakdancing, is the only completely new sport added this year. It started as a dance but has become a competitive sport. It was first seen in the 2018 Youth Olympic Games and will now be part of the Paris Olympics. However, it won’t be in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
Debut of Kayak Cross
Kayak cross is a new event under canoe slalom. Four athletes will race each other from a ramp above the water. This is the first time canoeing will have athletes competing against each other and not just the clock.
Returning Sports
Surfing, skateboarding, sport climbing, and 3×3 basketball are coming back. Surfing will take place in Tahiti, a beautiful island in the Pacific Ocean. Sport climbing will have more participants this time, increasing from 40 to 68.
New Format: “Lucky Losers”
In track and field events between 200m and 1500m (including hurdles), athletes who don’t qualify for the semifinals will get another chance through a repechage heat. This gives them a second opportunity to advance.
Other Changes
- Men will now participate in artistic swimming.
- A new class is added to women’s boxing, while a class is removed from men’s boxing.
- Weightlifting classes are reduced from 14 to 10.
- In shooting, the mixed skeet team event will replace the mixed team trap events.
- These changes aim to make the Paris Olympics more exciting and competitive.
