While defending Vinesh Phogat over weigh-in issues at the Paris Olympics, IOA President PT Usha has reminded that it is the athlete’s own job to manage weight. Vinesh was removed from the competition weighing 100 grams over the limit before her gold-medal match in the freestyle 50kg category, she was evicted and her Olympic chances disappeared. They even raised questions over the performance of the IOA’s medical personnel, which include Chief Medical Officer Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala. However, Usha came to the defence of the medical team and termed the response as ‘unacceptable and deserving condemnation. ” She also pointed out that each athlete had their own support team responsible for such matters.
Vinesh has since appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS), seeking a joint silver medal with Cuban wrestler Yusneylis Guzman Lopez. A decision is expected on August 13.
