Indian badminton stars Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty got lucky with their draw for the Paris Olympics kicking off July 26. These guys, who used to be the best in the world, are now in group C and ranked third. The toughest team they’ll face in this group is Indonesia’s Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Rian Ardianto, who are sixth best .
Satwik 23, and Chirag 27, have a good shot at winning gold. They grabbed the top spot in both the Thomas Cup and Commonwealth Games last year. Besides taking on the Indonesian team, they’ll go up against the German pair, Mark Lamsfuss and Marvin Seidel, who are ranked 31st in the world. They’ll also face off with the French duo, Lucas Corvee and Ronan Labar, who sit at number 43 .
The men’s doubles draw got pushed back because of a Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) hearing about how many pairs should be in it. The World Badminton Federation (BWF) had to wait to do the draw after CAS told them to tell the International Olympic Committee to add Corvee and Labar. This made the men’s doubles draw have 17 pairs instead of the 16 pairs they first planned on having.
