Sreeja Akula and Manika Batra are leading the charge for India in table tennis at the Paris 2024 Olympics, with Sreeja ranked 16th and Manika 18th in the tournament seedings. The International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) announced these rankings recently. In both men’s and women’s singles events, 67 players are seeded, along with 16 seeded teams in the team events, according to information from Olympics.com.
Sreeja Akula, aged 25 and a two-time national champion, achieved a career-high ranking of No. 24 in the world last month. She made history by becoming the first Indian to win a WTT Contender singles title in Lagos in June. She also clinched the doubles title partnering with Archana Kamath.
Manika Batra, currently ranked 28th globally, closely follows Sreeja in the seedings for Paris 2024. A former Commonwealth Games champion, Manika reached the quarterfinals of the Saudi Smash women’s singles event in May, marking the first time an Indian singles player reached this stage in a WTT Grand Smash event. This will be her third consecutive Olympics appearance.
Sharath Kamal, a two-time Commonwealth Games men’s singles champion, will make his fifth Olympic appearance, seeded 24th in Paris. Harmeet Desai, India’s national champion and ranked 86th globally, will make his Olympic debut as the 49th seed.
India will debut in the team events for table tennis at Paris 2024, with Manav Thakkar joining the men’s team and Archana Kamath joining the women’s team alongside the four singles players.
The Indian men’s team is seeded 14th, among the top five Asian teams, while the women’s team is seeded 11th. All six Indian players qualified based on their world rankings. Notably, there will be no Indian representation in the mixed doubles event at the upcoming Olympics.
Table tennis competitions at Paris 2024 will take place from July 27 to August 10 at the South Paris Arena.
