Latest Technology Updates: Suzuki wants to cut about 100 kg off the weight of the 10th-generation Alto, due in 2027. The latest model of the Alto—its ninth generation—has been in production since 1979 and has undergone several shifts in weight through the years. The first-generation Alto was 545 kg; the ninth generation was 680 kg.
Suzuki will make use of lightweight materials in the chassis and also in the engine components to reduce weight. This strategy has already been implemented through the new Z12 engine in Swift. This same engine will be used in other Maruti vehicles like the WagonR, Dzire, Baleno, and Fronx.
The new, lighter form is likely to make the Alto even more fuel-efficient. Currently, the Maruti Alto K10 returns 24.39 km/L with a manual transmission and 24.90 km/L with AGS. The CNG variant gives 33.85 km/kg. With the weight reduction of the 10th generation model, it is likely to return around 30 km/L, and the CNG model could return 37–38 km/kg.
