1. Meenakshi Temple, Madurai (Tamil Nadu): This Dravidian architectural temple is devoted to the consort of Lord Shiva, Parvati. The Meenakshi Temple complex consists of multicolored gopurams that rise high above the temple complex.
2. Mahakaleshwar Temple (Ujjain, MP): In the ancient city of Ujjain, in Madhya Pradesh, India, lies a temple of Lord Shiva. He is one of the Jyotirlingas, and what is special here is that the Jyotirlinga is said to be Swayambhu, or self-manifested.
3. Jagannath Temple, Puri, Odisha: Enshrined in the temple is Lord Krishna; this temple is one of India’s Char Dham pilgrimage sites. This temple is famous for its annually conducted Rath Yatra, also known as the Car Festival, wherein huge chariots carrying the deities Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra are driven on the streets by dedicated followers.
4. Kashi Vishwanath Temple (Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh): Varanasi is supposed to be one of the most holy towns in Hinduism. Without the spiritual feel along the Ganges River and the view of the various temples that line the ghats, a visit to this city is incomplete. The Kashi Vishwanath Temple is devoted to Lord Shiva.
5. Tirupati Balaji Temple (Andhra Pradesh): The Tirupati Balaji Temple enshrines Lord Venkateswara, the incarnation of Vishnu, and is one of the most famous pilgrimage centers in the world. Being on the Seven Hills of Tirumala, it draws scores of devotees throughout the year.
