In the midst of a burgeoning social media trend advocating for the Lakshadweep islands as an alternative tourist destination to the Maldives, reports reveal plans for a new airfield at the Minicoy Islands. This airfield aims to facilitate both military and commercial operations, accommodating fighter jets, military transport planes, and civilian aircraft. Amidst these developments, the online movement ‘Boycott Maldives’ has gained traction, underscoring shifting preferences and drawing attention to India’s efforts to promote Lakshadweep as a noteworthy tourist destination. The new airfield at Minicoy Islands further signifies strategic advancements in both military and civilian spheres, reflecting a dynamic landscape in the region.
Initially proposed years ago, the recent inclusion of defense capabilities has propelled active progress in the development. Strategically, the airfield on Minicoy Islands would enhance India’s military capabilities, serving as a vantage point to monitor the Arabian Sea and Indian Ocean, particularly in light of recent disturbances like drone attacks on cargo ships and attempted piracy.
The Indian Coast Guard proposed the airstrip’s development, with the Indian Air Force slated to lead operations. Additionally, the Minicoy airport is anticipated to boost tourism in the region, complementing the existing airstrip in Agatti, which has limitations on the types of aircraft it can accommodate.
This development has gained prominence following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to the island territory, prompting political criticism from the ruling party in the Maldives against India’s efforts to promote Lakshadweep as a tourist destination.
