The Lakshadweep administration has implemented measures to simplify the process for visiting the archipelago by transitioning the mandatory e-permit application to an entirely online system. This eliminates the previous requirement for travelers, including Indian citizens, to pay a fee of Rs 200 at a bank and submit a deposit challan to obtain an entry permit. The new online process streamlines the permit issuance, enabling approvals within one to two days.
Notably, Alliance Air, the exclusive Indian airline servicing Lakshadweep, is experiencing heightened demand, with flights fully booked until March. This surge in demand underscores the pressing need for improved air connectivity to the archipelago. Alliance Air operates the only aerial route to Lakshadweep, connecting Kochi and Agatti.
To address the increasing demand for air travel, the Lakshadweep government is planning significant developments. This includes the expansion of the existing Agatti airport runway and the consideration of a new greenfield airport at Minicoy capable of handling larger aircraft, specifically A320/B737 types. The proposed expansion involves extending the Agatti runway northward and expanding the shoulder to accommodate bigger planes, with plans for sea platforms. However, green concerns have delayed the Agatti runway extension, pending comments from the Airports Authority of India (AAI).
In addition to aviation developments, the tourist infrastructure in Lakshadweep is undergoing enhancements. The premium island resort in Bangaram has doubled its capacity from 32 to 64 rooms. Further, construction of premium resorts with modern amenities is underway in Suheli and Kamat Islands. Tent cities are also being established in Agatti and Kavaratti Islands.
Despite these advancements, certain areas in Lakshadweep still maintain prohibition policies, akin to Gujarat. However, exemptions exist in specific tourist zones where the sale of liquor is permitted. The comprehensive initiatives aim to facilitate easier access to Lakshadweep, enhance tourist facilities, and address the growing demand for air travel to this picturesque archipelago.
