Kolkata building collapse: The death toll from the collapse of an under-construction five-story building in Kolkata’s Garden Reach area on March 17 has risen to 13, with another victim succumbing to injuries. Mainul Haque, who was undergoing treatment at a city hospital, passed away late Tuesday night. After being rescued from the debris, he was initially taken to a local hospital and later transferred to the state-run S.S.K.M. Medical College & Hospital.
The Trinamool Congress-run Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) faced severe criticism following the incident. Questions were raised about how the building’s promoter obtained permission for a five-storey structure in the narrow lane of Garden Reach, adjacent to the Kolkata dock area. The promoter was subsequently arrested. Disagreements emerged between city mayor Firhad Hakim and deputy mayor Atin Ghosh regarding the incident’s handling. While the mayor suggested that identifying illegal construction wasn’t KMC’s or the local councillor’s responsibility, the deputy mayor asserted that the corporation couldn’t evade accountability. In response, KMC formed a seven-member probe panel to investigate the building collapse.
