Hemant Soren Arrested: Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren faced a significant development on Wednesday night as he was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with a land scam case. Following this, his cabinet minister, Champai Soren, is set to assume the role of the next chief minister of Jharkhand.
Hemant Soren, the former CM, arrived at Raj Bhawan a few minutes ago to submit his resignation in light of the legal proceedings against him. Earlier in the day, he had filed a FIR against ED officials at a SC/ST police station in Ranchi, reacting to the searches conducted at his Delhi residence. The ED, during the operation, seized a BMW car and ₹36 lakh in cash from Soren’s residence.
The ED’s move came after they reached Hemant Soren’s residence this morning to question him in connection with a money laundering case. The inquiry followed a day of intense political drama in the state, where the opposition BJP claimed Hemant Soren was “missing” and accused him of evading the federal agency.
As the ED continues its questioning of Hemant Soren, the possibility of his arrest looms. In such a scenario, his wife, Kalpana Soren, emerges as the frontrunner for the position of chief minister.
Amidst these developments, JMM MP Mahua Maji addressed speculations about Hemant Soren’s arrest, alleging a conspiracy by the Central Government and BJP to destabilize non-BJP-ruled states. She asserted the alliance’s unity and confidence that Hemant Soren would retain his position as CM.
Hemant Soren is facing allegations related to benami proprietors and illegal mining. ED officials have been actively questioning him at his official residence for over six hours. The situation has led to heightened activity outside Soren’s residence, with ED officials delving into the investigation of a large-scale racket involving the illegal change of ownership of land orchestrated by mafia elements in Jharkhand.
