The White House has issued a serious warning, expressing the need for the United States to possibly increase its nuclear weapons supply due to concerns about Russia, China, and North Korea advancing their nuclear programs.

During a speech to the Arms Control Association, Pranay Vaddi, Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director for Arms Control, emphasized that if adversaries’ arsenals remain unchanged, the US might have to raise its nuclear deployment in the future. This, he stressed, is to ensure readiness in case the president decides so.

Vaddi highlighted the potential necessity of more nuclear capabilities to effectively deter adversaries and protect Americans, as well as US allies and partners.

His remarks come amid heightened tensions among the United States, Russia, and China, raising fears of a full-scale conflict. Recent nuclear exercises by Russia, reportedly in response to perceived Western threats, have added to these concerns.

Vaddi also pointed out the troubling trend of China, Russia, and North Korea rapidly expanding their nuclear arsenals, ignoring arms control agreements. He warned that such actions not only threaten peace and stability but also endanger US interests and regional stability, especially when coupled with the sharing of missile and drone technology among these nations.

The US alert follows recent comments by Russian President Vladimir Putin, who suggested the possibility of deploying conventional missiles closer to Western territories in response to perceived threats against Russia. Despite tensions, Putin indicated that there’s currently no need for nuclear weapons to be used as leverage against the West.

Meanwhile, former US President Donald Trump has expressed concerns about the growing nuclear threat, considering it to be a more significant concern than climate change.

While Russia boasts the largest nuclear arsenal globally, recent statistics indicate that the United States has adhered to the strategic nuclear warhead limits set by the New START treaty, despite discussions about potential expansions.
