Cyclone Remal, Kolkata Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport will suspend flight operations for 21 hours starting from noon on Sunday. The cyclone is expected to impact regions including West Bengal, Coastal Bangladesh, Tripura, and parts of the northeastern states.
Flight and Port Suspensions
Due to the predicted heavy winds and rainfall associated with Cyclone Remal, a meeting with stakeholders led to the decision to halt flight operations from 12:00 PM IST on May 26 to 9:00 AM IST on May 27. Additionally, Kolkata Port will suspend all cargo and container handling operations from 6:00 PM on Sunday until 6:00 AM on Monday.

Evacuation and Safety Measures
Cyclone Remal is anticipated to cause a storm surge up to 1.5 meters high, potentially inundating low-lying coastal areas of West Bengal and Bangladesh. Thousands of people are being evacuated from coastal villages to cyclone shelters. The IMD has issued a red warning for districts including South 24 Parganas, North 24 Parganas, Kolkata, Howrah, and East Midnapore. Around 115 multipurpose cyclone shelters have been prepared in South 24 Parganas, and over 100 in North 24 Parganas.
Broader Regional Impact
The cyclone is also expected to bring rainfall and strong winds to other northeastern states like Tripura, Assam, Nagaland, and Manipur. Tripura has issued an advisory warning of heavy rainfall and gusty winds from May 25 to 28, as reported by Revenue Department Additional Secretary Dr. Tamal Majumder.
Preparations in Bangladesh
Bangladesh is preparing for the severe cyclonic storm by readying nearly 4,000 shelters equipped with adequate dry food supplies and water. The Bangladesh Meteorological Department is expected to issue a ‘great danger’ signal number 10 between midnight and 1:00 AM on Sunday.
This is the first cyclone in the Bay of Bengal during this pre-monsoon season, named Remal, which means “sand” in Arabic, as per the naming conventions for cyclones in the Indian Ocean region.
