The Nehru Zoological Park in Hyderabad recently bid farewell to Abhimanyu, a beloved nine-year-old White Bengal tiger, who succumbed to nephritis, a kidney condition. Born on January 2, 2015, in the same zoo to parents Badri and Surekha/Sameera, Abhimanyu had been battling renal issues since April last year. Despite receiving numerous medications and treatments recommended by veterinary experts, his health continued to deteriorate. By May 5, he struggled to wake up or walk properly, and his appetite waned since May 12.
Despite the unwavering efforts of the zoo’s dedicated veterinary team, experts, and caretakers, Abhimanyu passed away on May 14 at 2:15 p.m. in his enclosure. A post-mortem examination, conducted in the presence of veterinary experts, revealed chronic renal failure as the cause of death. Samples were collected for further analysis.
Abhimanyu’s demise deeply saddened the zoo community, as he had been an integral part of the zoo’s family. His memory will be cherished, and his loss felt profoundly by all who knew him.
