The application deadline for the Indian men’s cricket team chief coach role ended on Monday. Interestingly, neither the BCCI nor their preferred candidate, Gautam Gambhir, has made any statements. Gambhir’s profile has risen after leading Kolkata Knight Riders to their third IPL title. Despite the silence, it seems the BCCI has limited top quality options. Reports indicate that no notable foreign coaches have applied, especially after BCCI secretary Jay Shah stated the preference for someone familiar with the domestic cricket structure. Initially, VVS Laxman, head of the National Cricket Academy, was the BCCI top choice.
Laxman appears uninterested in a full-time position that demands a ten-month yearly commitment. The deadline is fine, but the BCCI brass wouldn’t mind taking more time to decide. So there’s no rush,” a BCCI source told PTI anonymously. Shah Rukh Khan, who is KKR principal owner, has a close relationship with Gambhir, making it difficult for the former India opener to leave an IPL team that has played an important role in his career.
