Gautam Gambhir, former Indian cricketer and current mentor of Kolkata Knight Riders, considered for India's head coach position by the BCCI.

According to recent reports former Indian opening batsman Gautam Gambhir is a top contender for the head coach role of the Indian senior men’s cricket team. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has advertised applications for that position and set May 27 as the deadline. The new head coach will lead the team across all formats from July 2024 to December 2027.

Current head coach Rahul Dravid’s contract which started after the 2021 Men’s T20 World Cup, was only meant to conclude after the 2023 Men’s ODI World Cup but was extended for this year’s T20 World Cup too.As per ESPNcricinfo article on Friday, Gautam Gambhir, who currently mentors Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), is among the top pickings by BCCI.Once KKR’s IPL 2024 campaign ends there will be talk with Gambhir.

The IPL final is scheduled for May 26th just one day before submissions close. It is understood that Dravid has indicated his decision not to seek reelection through BCCI.At forty-two years old although he has never served as a coach at national or state level, Gambhir brings an abundance of cricketing experience. He had two separate stints as a mentor in IPL including Lucknow Super Giants in both 2022 and 2023 where he worked.
